Out-of-the-Box Self-Care: Showing Up for Yourself in 2025

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of self-care? Is it a long, luxurious massage? An uninterrupted nap? Maybe it’s that shopping spree at your favorite store?

Don’t get me wrong, these are all amazing and absolutely essential when it comes to self-care. But let’s take it a little deeper.

Hey, it’s Brittany, your favorite Sexologist! And today, I want to dive into other ways you can show up for yourself in 2025.

Self-care isn’t just about pampering yourself; sometimes, it looks like setting boundaries with people who have gotten too comfortable with your “yes.” It might mean finally walking away from that job that’s been draining you dry. It’s about recognizing that taking care of yourself goes beyond bubble baths and treating yourself—it’s about honoring your needs in unexpected ways.

So, I’ve put together a list of out-of-the-box self-care ideas—things you may not have considered before but are just as nourishing for your mind, body, and soul. Let’s get into it!

Mind & Emotional Well-Being

  1. Write a Love Letter to Yourself – Pour your heart out, seal it, and read it a month later when you need a reminder of your worth.

  2. Create a “Hype” Playlist – A go-to list of songs that make you feel powerful, sexy, and unstoppable.

  3. Rehearse Positive Self-Talk in the Mirror – Look yourself in the eyes and affirm your greatness. Say it like you mean it!

  4. Host a Solo Date Night – Get dressed up, cook (or order) a fancy meal, and toast to your own damn self.

  5. Record a Voice Memo for Future You – Speak encouraging words to yourself and listen when you need a pep talk.

Physical & Sensory Care

  1. Try a New Sensory Experience – Ever tried a sound bath, float therapy, or a blindfolded taste test? Your senses deserve to be indulged!

  2. Dry Brushing – A simple, underrated ritual that exfoliates and boosts circulation.

  3. Erotic Self-Care – Sensual massages, self-pleasure, or even reading erotic literature without shame—it’s about reconnecting with your own pleasure.

  4. Body Mapping – Explore how different textures, scents, and temperatures feel on your skin. A deeper level of self-discovery.

  5. Adult Playground Time – Hula hooping, trampolining, roller skating—bring back childhood joy!

Creative & Playful Activities

  1. Make an Adult Coloring Book of YOUR Life – Draw or print images that tell your personal story.

  2. Messy Art Therapy – Finger painting, smashing clay, or scribbling wildly. No rules, just release.

  3. Dance Naked in Your House – No judgment, just vibes. Pure liberation.

  4. Write a Spicy or Fantasy Short Story – Let your imagination and desires run wild.

  5. Create a “Vision Scrapbook” Instead of a Board – Layer images, textures, and colors to bring your vision to life in a more interactive way.

Spiritual & Energetic Self-Care

  1. Shadow Work Journaling – Face your inner thoughts, unpack past wounds, and heal on a deeper level.

  2. Forest Bathing – Simply be in nature without an agenda—just breathe, observe, and exist.

  3. Energy Cleansing Rituals – Palo santo, sound bowls, or even a salt bath to release heavy energy.

  4. Practice Lucid Dreaming – Train yourself to take control of your dreams and explore new realms within yourself.

  5. Gaze at the Moon & Set Intentions – Charge yourself like a crystal under the moonlight. Yes, seriously.

Social & Community-Based Self-Care

  1. Anonymous Acts of Kindness – Pay for a stranger’s coffee, leave an uplifting note, or send flowers anonymously.

  2. Try a Social Detox Challenge – No phone, TV, or gossip for a day (or more!). Let yourself breathe.

  3. Curate Your Social Media for Joy – Unfollow accounts that drain you. Follow only what uplifts, educates, or inspires.

  4. Host a “No Small Talk” Gathering – Deep conversations only. Challenge people to go beyond “How’s the weather?”

  5. Adopt a “Slow Life” Practice – One day a week, move intentionally slower—eat slower, talk slower, live slower.

Final Thoughts: Give Yourself Permission

The next time you plan a self-care day, week, or even just a few hours for yourself, I challenge you to step outside the usual and try something new. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. It’s okay to unplug from everything—family, kids, work, responsibilities—and just be with yourself.

At the end of the day, if you’re not taking care of YOU, then who else is going to do it?
